The story of our book begins with family.

Our family loves to play all sorts of games. One game baked into our daily routines is cryptograms.

If you're not familiar, cryptograms are word puzzles where each letter has been swapped for another. The result is an unreadable mess, and our job is to unscramble everything.

Watching a puzzle come into focus is very rewarding, and It's a great way to exercise your mind.

Finding cryptograms to solve used to be easy.

Not that long ago, finding a cryptogram to solve over coffee or tea was no more difficult than opening the newspaper.

Recently though, things have started to change.

The first signs of trouble came more than a thousand miles from home. In Florida, our parents found sunshine and reprieve from the frigid Canadian winter, only to discover the local paper dropped cryptograms from their pages.

Trouble was brewing in paradise. But, as Plato famously said, "necessity is the mother of invention."

Making Cryptograms

With the daily routines and mental health of loved ones hanging in the balance, we did what anyone would - solve a problem.

Every weekend over that winter, we would create a batch of cryptograms, one for each day of the following week, then send them with love over email.

We discovered making cryptograms is fun, and we learned what makes cryptograms fun to solve. We also figured out how to make cryptograms more challenging, and more enjoyable.

It was time well spent, especially when we discovered our cryptogram troubles weren't limited to just sunny Florida.

Troubles At Home

It was as if there was a secret meeting of newspaper owners, where they decided cryptograms had to go.

Upon returning home, our family discovered their local paper "improved" the games page. Cryptograms survived the axe, but were now printed so small, they were unplayable.

Winter was over, but our job as preferred supplier of cryptograms continued, and to more and more frustrated cryptogram fans.

Learning more

Re-tasking the Hubble Space Telescope shouldn't be a prerequisite to solve a cryptogram. The newspaper provided an obvious but important lesson. What other lessons did we need to learn about cryptograms in printed form?

We began to scour newspapers still couragous enough to publish cryptograms. How large was the typeface used? How did they layout the puzzle? Did they offer hints or answers?

We also examined cryptograms available online. We even created an online cryptogram game of our own. This proved to be a hit and made playing our puzzles easier for our growing crowd of family and friends.

Next, we took a close look at as many cryptogram books as we could find. Over time we developed strong ideas about what works, what doesn't, and most importantly what we would do if we wrote a cryptogram book of our own.

Our book

We've combined everything we've learned about creating great cryptograms with how to best organize them in print. Then we put it together in a book.

Our book.

If you enjoy cryptograms and would enjoy a great new set of puzzles to solve, your wait is over. We are happy to announce our book has been released into the world, available on Amazon.

Everything has been carefully thought out, and we have a few surprises, surprises no other cryptogram book on the market we've seen delivers on.

We are excited about it, and we hope you are too.
